 Info sheet for the exhibition 'elements' on display as part of Science Week 2007 in the window of Self Preservation. 

 9ct gold is an alloy made up of the elements gold, silver and copper. The brooch pin is made from 9ct gold and the brooch is made of the elements of 9ct gold in the correct proportions: (24ct gold 37.5%), fine silver (14.5%) and copper (48%). In the test piece the proportions were done by size, 18.8 mm, 7.2 mm and 24 mm but because of the specific gravity of the metals (gold is heavier than the other metals) that would have meant that if the piece were melted it would not have been 9ct gold so the brooch looks a little different from the test.
